OMV Rallye Waldviertel Changes Date of the Event

Final run of the T Mobile Rallye-Championship from 28th – 30th of October 2004
Start and finish once again in Horn, but Waidhofen/Th. is also integrated this year

Initially it had been planned to hold the final event of this year’s rally season from 4th to 6th of November, starting and finishing in Horn. But now the FIA in Paris has agreed to change the date to earlier in the year.

Logistic and organizational reasons had Helmut Schöpf, chief of organization, change the date of the OMV Rallye Waldviertel to one week earlier – from 28th to 30th of October: „This date meets the structure of the rally much better. Looking back on the weather conditions of the last years, it happened quite frequently, at the old date, that snow started to fall during the two days of the rally. That caused some problems, especially for the rally-crews. Furthermore, the new date accommodates better to the needs of foreign competitors, since the Championships end earlier in other countries. With Horn, the start and finish of the rally stay the same.“

New, on the other hand, is the stronger integration of the OMV Rallye Waldviertel into the municipality of Waidhofen/Thaya. There are still some details left to be cleared up before the exact facts will be made available to the public.

One fact, though, seems to be certain. The OMV Rallye Waldviertel will be the only rally in Austria to be part of the European Championship. All other organizers have returned this status to the FIA. Helmut Schöpf explains: „For myself as chief of organization, as well as for the federal state of Lower Austria, an European-Championship-run presents an honour – it says a lot about the status of the rally. Furthermore, our new main sponsor, OMV, also pursues rally-cooperations in various countries. Among them the Germany Rally that, sponsored by OMV, is part of the World Championship. In addition to that, the OMV is successfully represented in countries like the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary and Slovenia, not only through their products but also by their association with the extremely successful native rally sport scene. Therefore it should be possible to welcome drivers from these countries at the end of October in the Waldviertel. I’m sure, they would rather compete in an event that is distinguished by a FIA-rating.“

This means that the OMV Rallye Waldviertel will be held according to the European Championship system – World Rally Cars and cars of Group A, Class 8 will start ahead of the rest of the field.
