The Austrian Red Bull Skoda Team kicks off the World Rally Championship, Manufacturer 2 season with two Fabia WRCs.

BRR (Baumschlager Rallye & Racing) will use two Fabia WRCs.

At the start of the season Gilles Panizzi (F) and Mattias Ekström (S) are alternating races whilst the Austrian, Andreas Aigner, will be starting for ten rallies in the World Championship.

The Skoda brand will be represented once again in the World Rally Championship 2006 season, participating this season through supporting private teams. Both Fabia WRCs that are officially nominated for the Manufacturer 2 category are sponsored by RED BULL and Skoda Auto and used by the Austrian Rally Team BRR (Baumschlager Rally Racing) for ten World Championship rallies.

For the first four events the following driver teams are starting. The first event in Monte Carlo will see Gilles Panizzi/ Herve Panizzi starting for the Red Bull Skoda Team. Both Frenchmen are also fixed up to start in the Spanish and Corsican rallies. In Sweden the DTM star, Mattias Ekström, with his co-driver Stefan Bergmann, will wear the Red Bull Skoda Team colours.

It has been decided that Andreas Aigner with his Co-driver Timo Gottschalk will start for all ten planned WRC events. At a later point in time it will be determined which team colleague is going to start alongside the Austrian for the Sardinia event onwards.

It is a pragmatic decision from Skoda Auto to be represented within the highest class of Rally sport through a private team. “ WRC is seeing a complete change around. Three leading factory teams have withdrawn until the implementation of the new regulations whereupon they have established private teams. Skoda Auto has also decided to take this step.” explained Harald Ludanek, Technical Director for Skoda Auto.

The Red Bull Skoda Team, with both Fabia WRCs, will be officially representing Skoda in the Manufacturer 2 category. Competing independently this season is a third WRC driven by Jan Kopecky for a Czech Republic Team.

Detlef Wittig, the Chairman of Board of Directors from Skoda Auto, is delighted with this decision. “I am completely confident that both cars from the private teams, supported by the manufacturer, will be excellent ambassadors for the Skoda brand in this coming motor sport season.”

„The crew will consist of 60 percent from the original factory mechanics and 40 percent from the seasoned crew” confirmed the BRR Director Raimund Baumschlager. Raimund Baumschlager has managed to gain further support for the newly formed Skoda Team through Red Bull, Nevado, Remus and Eibach, who have in the past actively supported Armin Schwarz with his Rookie Rally Driver Project. “We are convinced that we will have the perfect combination with the original Skoda factory mechanics and highly motivated race mechanics from Austria.”

Red Bull Skoda Team anticipates the perfect combination with their choice of drivers. “With the agreement of Panizzi and Ekström to drive for Red Bull Skoda, the team has now two internationally experienced pilots. Therefore we are awaiting a very good result in the WRC and it is important that there is a continuous point scoring result in the “Manufacturer 2” for Skoda. “Especially our rookie, Andreas Aigner, will profit from the knowledge from the experienced drivers.” stated the Team Representatives Raimund Baumschlager and Armin Schwarz who will run their Skoda Fabia WRC in their Team BRR (Baumschlager Rally Racing) for ten Rallies in World Championship.”

Participation under Manufacturer 2 category are all the teams which will compete with last seasons WRC Technical Specifications. The usage of technical developments is only allowed in Manufacturer 1 category.
